UINTAH UTES TIE ALTERRA 26-26 IN FOOTBALL THRILLER Uintah Utes fought the defending champs, the Alterra Spartans, to a 26-26 tie in a thriller at Alterra Friday afternoon, af-ternoon, in the season's opener for both teams. The game was a thriller every minute with only a few points separating the two teams most of the time. Play for both teams was generally good, although there were many fumbles. Tom Snyder, Uintah captain, played an outstanding defensive game along with ends Ralph Bryson, Bruce Preece and Bud Jacobson. The backfield also played a great game and especially clicked on the offensive play. Quarterback Eddie Davis really seemed to know what to call and when to call them, while halfbacks Caldwell and Weeks placed that pigskin nicely with help from Marvin Richardson and Bob Wardell. The Uintah squad made their first touchdown . in the first quarter, with a beautiful run by Lowell Caldwell. Caldwell took the ball near his own end zone and packed it through the whole enemy team for a touchdown. The place kick was blocked. The Utes' second score came in the second quarter on a quids lateral pass from Richardson to Weeks around left end. Bud Jacobson made the run over the foran extra point. Weeks also made :he third score on a lateral from Caldwell. The place kick was wide. The lat touchdown for Uintah was made by Caldwell on a run around left end. The scoring play came on the fourth down after Uintah had been stopped dead on the one yard line. The extra point was run over by Caldwell also. Alterra made their touchdowns in the first, third and fourth quarters, making the dropkicks after each. These with the safety they made in the third quarter made their 26 points. ' Uintah's starting lineup: Tom Snvder. center; Eddie Davis, quarterback; quar-terback; Melvin Weeks and Lowell Caldwell, halfbacks; BrucePreece and Ralph Bryson, ends. The Uintah Utes defeated Altamont in a game and the story about the contest follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express Oct. 13. 1948. UTES TAKE EASY 26-0 GAME FROM ALTAMONT The Uintah Utes playing at only half strength and without the services of regular center Tom Snyder and regular end Bruce Preece, swamped the AJtamont Longhorns 26-0 at the Jaycee park last Wednesday evening. The Uintah squad was sparked by halfback Melvin Weeks who ran over three of Uintah's four touchdowns and booted one place kick. In the first quarter Uintah received the kickoff and drove deeply into Altamont territory. A few plays later Weeks made the first score. It was all Uintah the first quarter with the Utes pushing over two more touchdowns with Lowell Caldwell carrying one over and Weeks taking the other. Weeks also made the place kick after Caldwell's touchdown. In the second quarter it was still Uintah as they marched up the field, but just couldn't make a score. The third quarter saw Uintah make their last touchdown on a beautiful run by Weeks in which it looked like he was knocked down several times, but kept on to make the tally. Uintah clashed with Roosevelt in 1948 and the story' follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on Oct. 6. 1948. UTE FOOTBALLERS MEET DEFEAT FROM ROOSEVELT BY 45 TO 16 I'intah's first season loss came as a shock to most of Uintah's fans as they looked at the final top heavy score. 45-16. 45-16. at Roosevelt Friday afternoon. The rampaging Rough Riders of Roosevelt seemed to score on anything and everything, while it seemed that everytime the Utes got in scoring territory the ball was either fumbled or a pass was intercepted. Both of the Uintah touchdowns were on long passes, and both passes were snagged by sticky-fingered ends. Joe Royhal Rnyhal's pass receiving was spectacular. spec-tacular. In the first quarter. Roosevelt took Uintah's kickoff and drove deeply into Ute territory. Two plays later the Hough Riders scored their first touchdown touch-down on an end run by Don Snvder. Point after was no good. The Rough Riders scored one more six pointer in the first quarter by McKinna. which made the score 12-o Roosevelt. In the second quarter.
