Each year in the United States some o,ow ouiuui cnuuren are seriously injured and approximately 100 are killed by motorists who ignore the flashing lights and warning signs of school buses. Utah had no fatalities, but had five injuries to school children during 1980. The Uintah School District daily transports 3,626 students of the 4,134 students listed on bus rolls. There are buses in the district, and they travel 2,371 school miles a day for 447,433 miles yearly including activity and field trips. School buses also transport children to and from the Learning Center in I'intah County. The bus drivers serving the District me from many walks of life: from farmer to retailer they are usually employed two hours in the morning and afternoon to transport children. Drivers are required to have a minimum of six hours local training in w District and three days training in voat Utah Technical College during first year of work . Since 1974-75, the District has not had a fatal injury involving buses. This year the district was below the state average of 3.62. The District had an accident frequency rating of 2.77. "Driving caution cannot be over-stressed," over-stressed," said Kelvin Clayton, about the School Bus Safety Week.
