Acrylic mural livens up Junior High Over 200 students at the Vernal Junior High School participated in a two-week project to liven up the school's cafeteria by painting a mural. Under the direction of artist Bonnie Susec, Utah Art Council, the students in the school's two art classes planned and painted the eight-foot by 26-foot mural on the north wall of the cafeteria. The first week the students planned their piece of the mural which they intended to paint. This contributed to the busy appearance of the mural, "because each class added their ideas to the previous classes' mural," Miss Susec said. "With the experience from the preceeding week, the students composed com-posed the subject matter they desired on the mural," Miss Sucec said. "This is the neatest school I've ever worked with," Miss Sucec added, about her experience at the Vernal Junior High. According to John Childs, principal, the purpose of the project was to reduce the institutional atmosphere at the school. "We want to show that the school is for the kids," Childs said. The mural is anything but institutional. in-stitutional. Painted in bright acrylic paints on masonite, it depicts outer space scenes along with a rural farm setting. Miss Sucec spent last week at the junior high showing slides of her paintings to the students. |
