Show BOXING NOTES Unbeaten Gerry Cooney continued his march toward the heavyweight title with a devastating first round knockout of former world champion Ken Norton in a scheduled 10 round fight Monday night at Madison Square Garden. The fight was stopped just 54 seconds after the opening bell. Cooney, a 24 year old former construction worker with a sledge hammer left, recorded his 25th consecutive victory vic-tory and 21st knockout by battering Norton into senselessness in the opening open-ing minute of the fight. Cooney's first real punch of the fight, a savage left hook, hurt Norton and a barrage of blows to the head buckled his knees. Cooney fired lefts and rights to Norton's head and Norton slumped into a crouch in his own corner cor-ner and the fight was stopped. Gustavo Ballas, 112 and , Argentina, stopped stop-ped Ryoetsu Maruyama, 112'2, Japan in 11 rounds in a junior bantamweight fight in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Joey I Gibilisco, Italy, knocked j out Charlie Nash, Ireland I in the sixth round to win j the European lightweight ! boxing title in Dublin, Ireland. Jose Luis I Ramirez, 13G, Mexico, I outpointed E.equiel J "Cocoa" Sanchez, 135 and I Dominican Republic I in ten rounds in In-I In-I glewood, California. |
