Show Laetrile question brought to date QUESTION: What is the current thinking about Laetrile? ANSWER: You have have heard about a new study that has just been completed com-pleted in which Laetrile was given to cancer victims who had not reponded to standard therapy. This major government-sponsored study tested 156 patients, of which 102 have died and in only one case did the tumor shrink and then only briefly. Laetrile is legal in only 23 states, but an estimated $50 million dollars is spent on the derivative annually. For 25 years, backers of Laetrile have sought to have their anti-cancer drug certified. Many cancer victims have gone to Mexico where treatment is legal. The most famous case was that of young Chad Green, who later died. This latest Mayo Clinic research has been endorsed by your American Cancer Society. Arthur Holleb, the Society's chief medical officer commented: com-mented: "Too many lives have been sacrificed to blind faith in the many Iaetrile promises that can't be kept." |
