On Friday, the Devils hosted the tough Green River Pirates and then took to the road on Saturday Sat-urday to do battle with the San Juan Broncos. The Green River quint was no pushover, as has been the story in the past. This year they are a good group that will win some games this year and may even enter the state tournament. The Devils started off hot in the first quarter against the Pirates and it looked as though they would have a chance to . .il j i ii use some reserves in that game, but the Pirates Pi-rates came on strong and at the end of the first period it was 15 to 15. The Pirates put on a press against the Devils and they seemed to be able to control the tempo of the game. During this second period, the Devils pulled out to a five point lead to go into the dressing dress-ing room. Bo Johnson hit for 11 points in the first half with Mike Adkison and Donny Knowles each hitting hit-ting for 8 points along I with Marlyn Wyatt, who hit on four field goals for eight points. Tim Ve-tere Ve-tere scored 10 for the Pirates and the big man for Green River, Russ ! Odle, scored 14 points. The Devils maintained their lead during the third period as they traded trad-ed baskets with the Pirates. Pi-rates. The score at the end of the third quarter ; was 52-45 for the Devils. During the fourth period, per-iod, everything broke loose and the game was up for grabs as the Pi-; Pi-; rates came from behind , to take the lead and put I the pressure on the Devils. De-vils. With less than a minute to go in the game, Bo Johnson hit on two , fast break lay-ups and a foul shot to ice the , game for the Devils. Top scorers for the , Devils were Johnson, ' with 24 points, Knowles , hitting for 13 and Wyatt with 11. Russ Odle scored . 23 for the Pirates with . Vetere hitting for 14 and Phil Stubblefield scoring 10, six of those in the fourth period. On Saturday, the Devils De-vils had to wait for some officials that never showed up for the game, and then went with the local officials that called the two earlier games. The game was tight all the way with the lead changing hands throughout through-out the entire game. First quarter score was 22-21 for the Devils with the Blanding crew taking a 43-42 lead at the half. The second half was more of the same as the Devils pulled off to a 3 point margin at the end of three periods, but the Broncos came back strong in the fourth period per-iod to tie things up at 79 all at the end of regulation regula-tion play. The two teams went into over time and after the first overtime period, per-iod, the score was again notted at 83 each. The Devils had a few opportunities during the second overtime to win the game, but couldn't pull them off and went down to defeat by two points, 89-91. Bo Johnson, again high scorer for the Devils with 28 points', had another ano-ther good game, and was helped out by Jeff Cathey with 16 points, Marlyn Wyatt hit for 13 points. Butts, the leading scorer for the Broncos, dropped in 11 field goals and nine foul shots for a total of 31 points and pulled down 24 rebounds. |
