Show MOTOR TRUCK TIPS f Chain Adjustment, Tn chain-driven trucks aljustment of these parts muse be carefully carried out. If the chain is drawn too tight excessive wear results. On the other hand, if the chain is slack, when the truck starts up it is likely to be broken or injured. Overloading. Truck operators do not always realize how overloading affects the engine and mechanism. When the truck starts all the parts are subjected to a sudden strain, which means wear. When the truck is overloaded this strain is- enormously enor-mously increased and the wear is correspondingly cor-respondingly rapid. Track "Wear. - ! One of the failings among drivers of solid tired motor trucks is driving in the street car tracks. Only the outside of the tire rests on the rail and consequently conse-quently only a small part of the tire sustains the whole load. The result is that the outside of the tire is rapidly worn off, while the rest is apparently in good condition. Tn a five-Inch tire track running wears off l1 inches of the surface, sur-face, reducing it practically to a SVa-inch tire. In this way a 314 -inch tire Is compelled com-pelled to do the work of a 5-inch tire, which amounts practically to overloading. This effect is more pronounced where dual tires are used on the rear wheels, a few inches of surface of one of the tires being compelled to endure the strain intended in-tended for the entire surface of two tires. |
