Show WWII TIRES I MOIUICK Experiments Prove Their Value in Handling' j Heavy Loads. That th6 pneumatic cord tire Is working work-ing radical changes in the construction of motor trucks by permitting a much heavier heav-ier pay-load to be carried on lighter weight trucks, has recently been demonstrated dem-onstrated beyond doubt. In experiments conducted by The Goodyear Good-year Tire Sz. Rubber company, Akron, Ohio, which operates a fleet of fifty trucks in the transportation of freiuht and passengers, pas-sengers, complete truck weight lias been cut to S000 pounds, permitting a record pay-load of 70'X pound3. The truck in question is composed of a two-ton chassis, a three-ton motor and 3flx7 and 42n3 tires. This remarkable development of truck transportation has already proved to the company that It can haul its own products prod-ucts from the factory to branch offices at a saving in freight rates. Incidentally it would mean a sweeping reduction in the hauling expense of many lare transportation trans-portation companies that have not chanced over from solids to pneumatics. Heretofore it was supposed that pneumatics pneu-matics -would not make any material difference dif-ference in truck construction, nor was It supposed that any heavy type of truck ! could be equipped with less than 4-ixlO tires on the rear wheels. Hut the com-j com-j pany kept close check on the perform-! perform-! ance of trucks and tires even to tin ex-j ex-j tent of sending several of its express trucks on coast to coast tiips. A truck weighing lo.Stm pounds, carrying carry-ing a pay-load of only pounds, was stripped to 11, son pounds and developed a pay-load of 5500. It was still considered consid-ered too heavy in proportion to the load carried. A further reduction resulted in a 10,000-pound truck with a pay-load capacity ca-pacity of 600 pounds. Th's was followed with the MtOO-pound truck now carrying a load of 7000 rounds. It is the belief of tho company experts that tho end is not yet in sight and that on heavier fypo of truck, pneumatic tires will sustain a pay-load equivalent to the weight of the truck. It is not altogether ImpossUe that eventually the pav-lad will outweiirh the truck. This is a testimonial to The wonderful performance of the pneumatic cord tire, whic'i already has achieved a rucord of delivering f.0,000 miles. |
