Show Hi IJS Amid the frantic rooting of 25,000 spec- i tators, Eddie Hearne, driving1 a Chrevolet Special, crossed the tape first in the 100-mile 100-mile automobile race held at Phoenix, Ariz., recently as the feature of the Arizona Ari-zona state fair. Hearne completed the distance in 1 hour and 29 minutes, an averajre of tiS miles nn hour, which is considered wonderful time in view of the fact that the race was run on a standard one-mile dirt track without banned turns. It had bot-n oiled the night before the race, and was very slippery, i Koseoe Sarles, In a front enar, finished second, but four minutes behind Hearne. Cliff Durn nt, in a Chevrolet, was iven j third place, while Nicholson, in a Hudson Special, and Joe Thomas, in an Over-i Over-i land, landed fourth and fifth places, re-; re-; speetively. ;' The race was marked by sensational ; driving, but was without the usual thrills j of accidents and close escapes. Waldo Stein's Golden Submarine went out of the contest on the seventy-seventh mile through entcien trouble: Miller's Fiat withdrew with-drew on the fourteenth lap for the samr reason; oyer and Goodson, in T-'ron-j tenaes, had crankshaft trouble early in I the race, and Toff withdrew because of I a. defective piston. j A remarkable feature of the race wac , Kddie Hearne's perfcrmanee in driving ja non-stop race on Goodyear cord tires. J Sar.es, Intrant, Nicholson and Thomas made one stop each to change, spark plugs, and make minor engine adjustments, 'rut their Ooodytars gave them no trouble, and all f ive found their tires in perfect condition even after such grueling uage. Out of eleven en t rants eh-:ht f in ished on Goodvears, including the first five to cross the line. |
