Show BROOKS MAY HEAD GOLF ASSOCIATION Cleveland Man Chosen by Nomination Committee to Succeed Thompson. CHICAGO, Nov. 10. "Wilbur H. EJ.-ooks of the Mayfield Country club. Cleveland, will succeed Charles F. Thompson of 'Chicago 'Chi-cago as president of the Western Golf .-association next: year, if the nominations committee's recommendations, announced tonight, are carried out at the annual meeting of the association in Chicago on January IT. The nominating committee's slate has never had serious opposition. President Thompson, who is finishing his third term, was compelled to refuse nomination tor a fourth year because of business, and the other officers, excepting except-ing Guy Gregg of Milwaukee, treasurer, and John W. Hughes of Omaha, one of the directors, also were compelled to relinquish relin-quish the work of the golf assaclation. While the list of officers promises to be almost entirely new. the administrative policies of the present officers is said to be indorsed by the nominees. The Thompson Thomp-son regime has been known as a progressive pro-gressive and liberal party, and peveral innovations in-novations in golf have been decreed, such as .the abolition of the stymie and a comprehensive com-prehensive definition of an amateur that reinstated Francis Ouimet after he had been declared a professional by the United Slates Golf association. The men nominated for next year are: President, Wilbur H. Brooks, Cleveland ; vice president, Albert R. Gates, Chicago; secretary, Reuben W. Newton, Chicago; treasurer. Guy F. Gregg, Milwaukee; directors. di-rectors. John W. Hughes, Omaha; James P. Gardner Chicago; Thomas B. Pine, Atlanta; At-lanta; James E . Nugent, Kansas City; Edward B. Tufts, Los Angeles. The entrance of Mr. Nugent of Kansas City, who is president of the Transmis-sfssippi Transmis-sfssippi Golf association, and of Mr. Tufts, president of the Southern California association, as-sociation, is said to indicate that an effort will be made to carry out the Western Golf association's proposed plan of organizing organ-izing a new national body, composed of the various state and regional golf associations. asso-ciations. The western association has attacked the policy of the United States Golf association as-sociation on the charge that it was controlled con-trolled by a comparatively few active club members in the east, but what seemed an open conflict between the two bodies was stopped by the war. Mr. Brooks has been well known among golfers for several years. As president of the Mayfield club he handled the arrangements ar-rangements last summer for the western open championship, in which James Barnes was returned winner. The committee named as members of the nominating committee for next year William II. M. McSurley. Chicago; John D. Cady. Rock Island. Til.: G. G. Yule. Cleveland: M. A . Mclaughlin, Denver, and J. K. Wadley. Texarkana. The nominations for lfC0 marked the passing from activity of Horace Smith of Tennessee, president for several years of the Southern Golf association and re-peatedlv re-peatedlv elector a director of the western association. After helping Crafts, with Hlgglns, manage the western open at Cleveland list summer, he requested that he bo relieved from furher active "work. The first Invitation for the western amateur championship has been rr.'eived from the Skokie Conn try club. Chicago, which thus far has no contenders. The tournament, won hy Harry T.,egg of Minnesota Min-nesota at St. Louis last summer, is due to be held in Chicago next year. As it has not been awarded to a north side club since the meet at Ex moor in 190 1. leaders in tournament affairs snv Skokie likely will obtain the championship. |
