Show FflRM-TD-TABLE ; EH PROPOSED I Direct Disposal of Products Sought by National Bureau Chief. SusscsUon that the week before Thanksgiving be set aside as "Farm to Table" week, in order that the farmer may dispose of some of his products without bringing them to market, was contained in a letter received yesterday by Governor Bamberger from Raymond Beck, chief of the national farm to table bureau. In his letter Mr. Beck says that much food is wasted on farms because it is of perishable nature and so small In quantity quan-tity that it would not pay the producer :o attempt to take it to a central market for sale. Hundreds of thousands of motor trips are taken every week in the country, he says, which are mostly tor recreation purposes, but which could be turned to good account in a utilitarian way. "But a very small percentage of these motorists ever stop at a farmer's gate and return with eggs, butter, poultry, vegetables and fruits." he says. "There is one reason for this the farmer does not display his wares, and the motorist hesitates before entering a farmer's gate, not knowing how he will be received. "It is our hope that you will Issue a message with regard to this movement, first "in the endeavor to bring to a consuming con-suming market the large quantity of foodstuffs ordinarily wasted; and. second, sec-ond, to gain the benefit that wiil be derived de-rived from the visits of the man of the city to the farmer in the bringing about of a better understanding between the two in the various problems that confront con-front both." |
