Show Notes to "Santa Glaus1 Are Subject of Postal Order LETTERS addressed to "Santa Claus," which, when each. Christmas draws near, are found in mail boxes, are the subject of an order issued by J. C. Koons, first assistant to the postmaster general at Washington. The order follows: "Postmasters are authorized to deliver de-liver all letters on which the postage has been fuliy prepaid arriving at their respective postoffices during the month of December of each year which are addressed plainly and unmistakably un-mistakably to 'Santa Claus,' without any other terms or expressions identifying iden-tifying the persoii for whom such letters are intended, to responsible charitable institutions or reputable individuals in the town or city of address who may desire to use them exclusively for philanthropic purposes. pur-poses. "Letters of the character described addressed for local delivery on which the postage is wholly unpaid, or paid less than one full rate, also may be delivered to such institutions or Individuals In-dividuals upon the payment of the postage with which they are chargeable. charge-able. In the event that these letters are requested by more than one institution in-stitution or individual, the postmaster postmas-ter shall distribute them in such proportion as he may deem proper. "When no voluntary request is presented, pre-sented, postmasters will forward without delay all 'Santa Claus' letters let-ters to the division of dead letters." |
