Show SLUMP IN CHICAGO IWRKETFOR Peace Gossip, Moderating Weather and Promised Receipts Responsible. CHICAGO, Feb. 1. Peace gossip, together to-gether with moderating weather that promised enlarged receipts, gave the corn market today a downward slant. Prices closed easy, at the same as yesterday's finish to c lower, at $1.26 for March and $1.24 to $1.2-1 for May. Oats underwent a setback of lc to 151c net. Provisions gained 2Uc to 20c. Right from the outset the corn market was largely dominated by peace talk, and especially so by London assertions that Austria had made repeated advances to President Wilson. Many traders continued con-tinued also to act on bearish Influences from the president's letter referring to the international outlook for 1918- Sharp attention was given likewise to all news touching distrubances in Germany. Attempts At-tempts to rally the market proved to be of little use, owing a good deal to the fact that rising temperatures prevailed throughout the corn belt, and that no return re-turn to abnormal low levels was now In eight. Liberal country offerings had much to do with weakness of oats. Besides, export ex-port demand was lacking both from the east and the gulf. Optimism regarding peace chances helped to lift provisions.
