Drivir.g I squarely into a school bus loaded with twenty-five children returning from a consolidated school near here late today, a southbound Northern Pacific train crashed through the bus, killing seven of the occupants and injuring ail tiie others, including the driver. Homer Scalier, Mary Snook?, John, Karl and Charies Kaivo, brotherE. none more than 15 years old, v.ere killed, their bodies mangled almost beyond recognition recogni-tion by the wheels of the tin in. Gladys McCandlae-r, Andy Doan, Mary Fogarty, John Go wan and Harold Hagen were the most seriously injured, and have been removed to a hospital at Moose Lake, where it is said they will recover. Carl Mueller, driver of the bus, was but slightly slight-ly hurt The force of the impact derailed the two rear cars of the train, but none of the passengers was injured. As soon as the nature of the accident was learned passengers descended from the train and assisted in caring for the injured. Within a short time a epecial train from Carlton Carl-ton and one from Willow River had arrived ar-rived with physicians and nurses, who dressed the injuries and hurried the children chil-dren to a hospital. The bus was a box-like affair, without windows, and Mueller said he, had. no chance to know that the train was approaching. ap-proaching. All the children who were in the accident ac-cident live between this place and Moose Lake. According to the statement of the police po-lice authorities here, the driver of the school bus is required to be flagged across the crossing at which the accident occurred, oc-curred, or In some other- safe manner assure himself that there are no trains approaching. Witnesses eaid tonight that Mueller did not get out of the rig to see if the train was approaching, and, as there were no windows in the bus, he had no opportunity to know of the approaching ap-proaching danger until the train struck the bus. Several of the children who were not badlv injured disappeared from the scene of the accident, and for several hours their parents were unable to find them. At a late hour tonight, however, all had been located. The bodies of the children killed in the accident have been removed to a. morgue at Moose Lake. . The funerals will be held Sundav, according to present plans. A fcimilar accident, in which two school children were killed, occurred at Nelson, Minn., yestcro"ay. |
