Arraigned on a complaint issued at the instance of l.cou Bone, special ayent of the department of justice, on the charge of havin? represented himself him-self to be an ayent of the I'nited States government, Claude U. Worthinyton yesterday dcaded not guilty before United States Commissioner Henry V. Yau Pelt. His hearing was contiinicd until February 13, in order that he may have time in which to prepare his defense. lie was given his liberty on filing a $200 bond. AVorthiniton is accused of having erprescntcd himself to be au agent of the government in effecting the sale of a set of books published by the Bu-erau Bu-erau of National Literature, Xew York. On the strength of this reputation, it is alleged, he secured a check for $120 from -latthew .Joyce at Murphy, Idaho, lie was arrested at Ogden yesterday and was at once brought to Salt Lake. At the request of federal officials at Boise, Idaho, a complete description of Worthington was forwarded yesterday to that place by Mr. Hone. Worthington denies that he repre sented himself as being connected with the United States government in anv way, and his credentials show him to be merely an agent of the New York publishing company. He maintains that his arrest was the result of a frame-up by Joyce. |
