They i-ay the California orange crop, except in a few isolated districts, is practically a failure, due to hot winds which swept the Kedhinris and other important plantation planta-tion territories devoted to the culture of V citrus fruits, at a time when the fruit was in the stage of "setting." The hot wave was particularly destructive in the Kiverside and Pomona growing districts. Jn these places scarcely sufficient oranges or-anges were grown to satisfy the trade of those localities, according to reports and statements carried in citrus fruit market journals. Wholesale Prices. ' , "Wholesale prices for oranges range ! from $K.25 to $9.25 per crate, the price being fixed according to the size of the , fruit contained in the crate. Florida . oranges are selling locally at 25 cents per"! crate lower than the California product, ; and while Florida produced a good crop i this season, the great distance from the j Salt Lake market prohibits shipments in large quantities when all conditions ! are equal ' in California. The Florida 1 product, dealers declare, is not in as : groat demand in Salt L.akoas the Call- j lorn fa fruit, chiefly on account of the ; peculiarly unattractive appearance of the southern citrus goods, the skin of which ; is always greenish and inclined to be spotted. California fruit, at the height of maturity, is a golden color and usually without skin blemish of any sort. Lo- j cal commission merchants, however,, de- clare th;;t the Florida orange contains ail the elements of the very best California Cali-fornia fruit, acid, sugar and flavor. None of the dealers expect any particular reaction re-action in the orange market, although; shipments are not believed to be coming us rapidly at the present moment as they j may later on.
