Show COPPER IS BEING SENT BY EXPRESS Urgent Need of Some Consumers, Railroad Rail-road Congestion and Freight Embargoes Em-bargoes Paly' Part. Shipments of copper by express have been made during the past few weeks to consumers whose needs were so urgent as to demand the quicker, but much more expensive method of securing supplies, says the Boston News bureau. The situation as regards shipments of copper from western mine and smelter point? to eastern refineries continues extremely ex-tremely critical, with no immediate relief in sight. It is understood that Anaconda has started to ship smelter product from Montana Mon-tana to Galveston via rail and thence to New York by water. Copper from Taco-ma. Taco-ma. comes east via Canadian lines. From south west era points copper comes over roundabout routes never before attempted. attempt-ed. In shipping from eastern refinery points to New England water routes have been utilized where railroads cannot handle han-dle the traffic. Freight rates from Perth Amboy and Ran tan, N. J. refinery points, to consumers' con-sumers' yards In Connecticut, run about ?2.1Q per net ton, while the express tariff raneres from about 55 cents to $1 per hundred hun-dred pounda, equal to $10 and higher per1 ton. Baltimore shipments to similar con- ; suming centers command 4 a ton by i freight and from $1.10 to $1.90 per hundred hun-dred by express. The lake-rail rate from Michigan shipping points to New York averages 4 2 ',.4 cents per hundred pounds, while similar shipments! by express would cost from ?2.15 to $3.70 for the same . amount. |
