Show FULTON WINS FIGHT IN THE SECOND ROUND Charley Weinert Proves No Match for the Minnesota Giant; Referee Stops Bout. By International N'ews Service. NEW YORK, Feb. 12. Fred Fulton, the Minnesota giant, defeated Charley Weinert of Newark, N. J., in less than two rounds of a six-round bout at Madl- son Square Garden tonight. Weinert was on his feet when Referee Jim Brown stopped the contest after two minutes and twelve seconds of the second round Jiad been fought. From the start Fulton pounded the Newark man with a short left. He drew blood from Wetnerfs nose and mouth wlih almost the first punch, and from then on Weinert was a sorrv sipht. Although Al-though hit many times, Weinert stu-k to Ills feet despite his wabbling. Fulton . weighed 22: 1-2 pounds and Weinert 1m 1-2. a duterence of thirty-nine pounds, but as the bout showed, there was a greater difference than poundage Although Referee Brown is satisfied that v emert had no chance, the Newark heavyweight's seconds protested that their man was able to go on. Brown waved them away and the crowd to a man agreed with him. j Orant Hugh Browne, who stepped Into the limelight aa a new garden promoted, declared that the referee did the proper thing. "I want to protect the game," said Browne, "and t lie proper way is not to abuse it." Cleverness and speed made Fulton an easy winner. Though Weinert got over some hard swings, Fulton kept a stiff left working ort Weinert' s body and slipped over a wicked left hook. Weinert landed some good wallops in the opening round, but Fulton's left started his nose bleeding and Weinert ; backed to the corner at the end of the , first round rather hazy. In the second Weinert rushed and landed a furious right, following- with a left hook. Fulton crashed his left on Weinert's chest, staggering stag-gering him. and then brought over two more hard left hooks. Weinert got over two more right swings, but Fulton then worked his right and left so hard that Referee Brown stopped the bout. The attendance was disappointing to the new promoter. Not more than 50 per cent of the crowd expected turned up. Some fight fans blame the weather. Promoter Browne did not try to explain. |
