Show mm io young FIGHT FIERCE DRAW Oklahoman Substitutes for George; Slater and Boyle in Slugging Match. Pat Gilbert and AI Young, the latter of Oklahoma, who was substituted for Chris George, hammered each other to a six-roimd draw at the Manhattan club last night. At almost the last minute before gong-time Chris notified Manager Hardy Downing that his left hand was in no condition to stand a stiff scrap, so Young was put in to take his place. The Oklahoma boy was not trained for the battle, .but he held the fighting boilcrmaker even at every stage of the game, and the only fair decision at the final bell was a draw. Pat went after Young hammer and tongs as soon as the handshaking was over. He rushed the Oklahoma lad to the ropes with his ' aggressive tactics, but Young came out of the mixup and slammed the local lad back to the center cen-ter of the ring. The following rounds were fought with both men standing toe to toe and slugging heavily. During the last two frames both fought desperately and each blow w-as aimed for a knockout. Gilbert missed often with haymakers that would have meant the long end of the money it they had landed. Young bad a shade as to cleverness and ducked several stiff ones, following with heavy wallops before Pat found himself again. At tho final .bell the boys were scrapping mer-rilv, mer-rilv, with things absolutely even. With the exception of tiie star affair and , semi-windup between Kid Slater aud Buss Boyle of Ogden, the scraps in general last' night turned out fizzles. However, the Boyle-Slater battle was such that without another scrap on the bill the fans would have had their money's worth. It was slug, slug, slug, everv second the boys were in the ring. Buss started out by pounding the local lad all over the square, but soon the tables were turned and Slater was on top, whanging merrily. The boys mixed it in such manner that the fans were standing on their feet through the entire en-tire scrap. In the fifth frame Slater landed so hard and so often that Buss went to the mat. He gamely rose and was promptly sent to the canvas again. This was repeated several times until Bovle went down for good. Buss fought one of the gamest battles that has been witnessed at the local club this season and the fans appla.uded him loudly as he left the ring. Joe Logan, who gave his residence as San Francisco, lasted about half a round with Bob Moore, the fireman. If Losan knows rven the smallest detail about the gajne he failed to show it last night. The bout was stopped when Logan found a soft spot on the mat aud lav down to rest. Referee Hardy Downing came in for a lusty panning from the fans when he called' the Gus Williams-Willie Gee affair af-fair a draw. Willie stalled throughout the four rounds and seemed afraid to mix things with Williams. Lawrence Tibbs was no match for Kid Dutch, and Hardy was compelled to stop the one-sided affair in the first frame. . . . . Slim Warden was given the decision over Ked Sims in a laugh-provoking curtain raiser. |
