Show WOULD PROLONG WAR. It is not to be supposed that the peo-1 pie of the United States will readily, fall in with the proposal of Fredrick C.I Walcott of New York that a fund of $500,000,000 be collected in this country coun-try for the war sufferers in Europe in the hope that such action would be a powerful influence for peace at this time. Mr. Walcott recently investigated investigat-ed conditions in Belgium and Poland for the Rockefeller Foundation and returns' home filled with sorrow for the unfortunate unfor-tunate non-combatants whose groanings have caused a shudder throughout the world and arrested the progress of civilization. civ-ilization. The people of this country have already al-ready expended $40,000,000 for the war sufferers of Europe and Asia and the good work continues. Never before has there beeen such an exhibition of the truly Christian spirit when the black clouds of war have all but excluded ex-cluded the warming rays of the sun of Christianity from, the earth. Yet it is possible that, should the plan of Mr. Walcott be followed and the government govern-ment and people of the United States cont r Unite half a billion dollars more for relief of the non-combatants, instead of promoting peace the contribution would have exactly the opposite effect and the war continue to rase with unabated una-bated ferocity. In the very nature of 'things the time must come when the , iv:ir:';:" nations will be exhausted and i i'uiccd to lay down their arms. Without doubt we should continue to bind hp the won a.
