Show ALLEGED NEWHOUSE SWINDLER ARRESTED Hugo I. Benish, alleged to have swindled swin-dled Samuel Xewhouse of Salt Lake out of $500U, was arrested in New York yesterday, according to a wire received bv J. Parley White, chief of police, last night. Chief White immediately telegraphed tele-graphed to the New York authorities to hold Benish and that an officer would be sent to bring him back for trial today. to-day. Mr. Newhouse recently met Benish on a train bound to the east. According to Mr. Newhouse, Benish represented that he had bought the Banner Chemical Chemi-cal company, Denver, and was in need of a partner with capital. Mr. New-house New-house gave Benish his check for $5000, it being understood, according to Mr. Newhouse, that that would qualify him as a partner. Mr. Newhouse also stated that if more money were needed he probablv could obtain it for Benish. Benish is alleged to have gone to Denver and cashed the check. Mr. Newhouse, upon his return to Salt Lake, became suspicious suspi-cious and asked Benish for a statement of the assets and liabilities of the company. com-pany. A certain statement was sect to Mr. Newhouse and he considered that it did not give the particulars desired. He promptly sought the aid of the police. po-lice. Chief White notified the county attorney of Weber county last night" and was informed that a complaint com-plaint and warrant would be Prepared today. Etth'er a Salt Lake officer or an Ogden officer will be scut to New York for Benish. According to Chief White, Benish is well known to police authorities throughout the west. For years he has been "a salesman for chemical supplies and has specialized in the sale of disinfectants dis-infectants which are used in jails and penitentiaries. |
