Teachers' j unions were attacked by Jacob Loeb, president of the board of education of Chicago, in an address here today at a meeting of the department of school administration held in connection with the convention of the National Education Educa-tion association. Mrs. Ella Flagg Young, formerly superintendent of schools of Chicago, answered Mr. Loeb in a spirited deft-use of the principle after he had characterized organizations i of teachers as ' ' making for a divided j allegiance, breeding suspicion and dis- j content, encouraging class prejudice and i engendering class hatred. ' I Officers for the department of school ! administration were elected for the ensuing en-suing year as follows: President, O. M. Blummer, member board of education, Portland. Ore.; vice president, Frank B. YVilsey, member board of education, New York; secretary, secre-tary, William. C. Bruce, editor ' ' The School Board Journal," Milwaukee. A nation-wide system of pensions for teachers was advocated by Dr. Joseph Swain, president of Swarthmore college, at the general session of the convention. conven-tion. Gertrude H. Gardner of the state normal school of Kearney Neb., spoke on "The Conservation of Our Young Womanhood. ' ' Dr. Robert J. Aley, president of the University of Maine, was nominated today to-day for president of the association. 2s"o action, however, will be taken until tomorrow. to-morrow.
