Show OSBORNE ONCE MORE WARDEN OF SING SING NEW YORK, July 6. George W. Kirchwcy tendered his resignation as warden of Sing Sing prison to James M. Carter, state superintendent of prisons, here tonight and Thomas M. Osborne was reappointed to the office. Mr. Osborne, who retired as warden after he had been indicted on several counts by a West Chester county grand jury, wilt resume his duties on July 1G, Mr! Carter announced. Mr. Osborne, while warden of Sing Sing, was indicted last December on charges of perjury and immorality. He was tried on the former count and acquitted. ac-quitted. The supreme court then directed di-rected that the charge of immorality be stricken from the indictment, thus completely com-pletely vindicating him. The warden charged that his indictment was due to politics. Mr. Osborne refused to resign as warden war-den of Sing Sing after he had been indicted. in-dicted. After a conference with the governor, however, it was agreed that lie should surrender his ollice to Mr. Kirehwey. then dean of the Columbia University Law school. Among the most widely known of Mr. Osborne's reforms at Sing Sing was the formation of the Mutual Welfare league for the uplift of convicts. |
