These two 'statements brought to a conclusion an interesting part of the court proceedings before Judge E. A. Rogers yesterday afternoon. C. Smith, colored, about 35 years of age, was on trial, charged with assault and battery on Maggie Smith, his wife. Joseph Armstrong, the arresting pffi-cer, pffi-cer, had testified that on July 4 he had seen Smith fell Mrs. Smith with a blow of his fist near the Sa.ltnir do-pot do-pot and then undortake to drag tho prostrate woman away. Smith, in his own defense, explained that his wife was "full" ond had become- boisterous and that he was merely trying to prevent pre-vent her from making a disturbance. "Vou were full, too, wcron "t you'?" asked Judge Rogers. 1 ' Yes, judge, I was a little full, but not too ful, responded re-sponded the defendant. The sentence was thereupon imposed. |
