Show GOODS 5010 II UTAH TO BEJJPJO LABEL Food Commissioner Orders Dealers to Appear -for Investigation. Dealers who advertise "pure" maple syrup that is mostly cane and glucose and "strictly fresh" eggs that have seen better days, are getting into trouble with Heber C. Smith, state dairy and food commissioner. There is a clause in the statutes relating re-lating to pure dairy and foods products which prohibits tne advertisement of adulterations and culls as pure stuff and the best to be had, and yesterday Commissioner Com-missioner Smith notified six local dealers deal-ers that they would have to appear before be-fore the commission next Wednesday and explain why their goods do not live up to their published claims for them. The commissioner would not divulge the names of the culprits, declaring that he did not believe the dealers meant to violate the Jaw. They will have to give the commission assurances, however, that they will restrict their publicity to the truth, or Commissioner Smith will proceed against them in court. The commissioner com-missioner is also investigating other instances in-stances where the dairy and food bureau believes the goods are not as pure as their advertisements represent. "This sort of thing, ' said Commissioner Commis-sioner Smith vesterday, "is not fair to dealers who do advertise the 'strictly fresh' eggs and the 'pure' goods, and make good on their claims. Of those against whom we have the complaints, I want to eay that there is nothing against 'maple syrup that is mostly cane syrup, except that that is true. "But it must not be advertised as 'pure' maple svrup, or even as 'maple syrup' unless it is that." -The dairy and food department ia in-1 in-1 vestigating" strawberry jam, ' ' best ' ' ! creamery butter, "pure" olive oil and similar products where there is a suspicion sus-picion that the merchants are selling I adulterations advertised as strictly pure products.. |
