Show GOOD ACCOMPLISHED IN STATEAiVlPAlGN Utah Manufacturers' Association Asso-ciation Congratulated Upon Products Week. INTEREST IS GROWING Secretary Says That People Realize Benefits Derived From Co-operation. Measured in terms of per cent, the Utah Products week, which closed yes-: yes-: terday, averaged 50 per cent greater , than that of 1914, according to Secre-; Secre-; tary Eoscoe W. Eardley of the Utah Manufacturers' association, which es-, tablished the institution and is expanding expand-ing it yearly. Expressed in scope, effect and growing grow-ing use and consumption of Utah-made goods, the week showed an increase of from two to at least five-fold, further declared the secretary, baaing his statement state-ment upon reports that have come to him from merchants in Salt Lake, Provo, Ogden and other business centers cen-ters in the state. "Jspxt year the institution Is going to be even greater ' said Mr. Eardley, full of enthusiasm over the big success just Beored. "Our experiences and the scope of the work this year arm us with ideas and suggestions that will be added to those whiuh we have already in vogue to make the week one of moment to Utah and its people. "We have been highly gratified with the deep interest which nas been shown in the manufacturing industries of the state by the people in nearly every important im-portant town. Excellent Displays. "This year the window displays were not confined to Salt Lake and Ogden. but the merchants in other cities and towns grew enthusiastic and put Utah-made Utah-made goods to the front. The Salt Lake displays were fully as good aB last year, and in some respects they were better. "Ogden made a decidedly better showing than, last year, although last year we thought the displays were so j good that they could not be improved upon. It all goes to show that we are steadily making progress, and next year Utah Products week will be a bigger event than ever. With the experience we have had this year, next year the scope of the movement will be extended in a half dozen new directions. "That these movements are helping to build up the state, no one who stops to reason can doubt for a moment. During Dur-ing the week I have taken occasion to talk to merchants about the effect of such movements, and without a single exception they assert that home products are making steady advancement. Big Increase Seen. 'One of the largest merchants in Provo told me last jveek that in his store the demand for Utah -made goods had increased fully 100 per cent during the past two years. The demand for all kinds of goods has increased, he said, but I have observed that those manufacturers manu-facturers who have co-operated most with the Manufacturers' association and have conducted a conservative but steady advertising campaign on their own account have profited most. "Another large merchant in one of the northern towns said: 'Today we are selling just five times as much of a certain cer-tain product manufactured in this state as we were three years ago, and other lines, such as the canned goods, have more than doubled. I think the increase is due to two things. First, the consistent con-sistent campaigns being carried on to arouse a greater interest in Utah's industries, in-dustries, and second, the advertising which different Utah manufacturers are doing. ' "Not only the merchants, but the schools have shown a very great interest in Utah Products week. Perhaps neTer before in the history of Utah have so many schools had talks in a single week upon the resources and industries of the state. Many Helpers. "Starting at the university and the Agricultural college, wij have gone down to the high schools, the junior high schools and grade schools, a.nd the interest, in-terest, has been intense. "The churches did themselves proud, also. Some of the most prominent ministers min-isters in the state have expressed to us their approval and heartv support of tho I movement we have undertaken. "As usual, the press, which has always al-ways wielded a tremendous power in this ana other movements that look toward the upbuilding of the state, has been loyal and has given the week more publicity pub-licity than we really could have expected. ex-pected. I am sure that every manufacturer manufac-turer in the state will feel thankful to the newspapers which have been so generous with their news columns. "The billboard company also gave its assistance and did its full share. "Our trade oicursion to Utah county was a decided kuccohs. The association has been complimented on ever' hand for the thoroughness with which it was organized, and the spirit in which it was carriod out. Energetic Committees. "The full credit for this should go to our committees of busy men, who paused in their own affairs to work for the good of the community and the upbuilding of the state. "Taken as a whole it has been a great week in the history of Utah industries. It demonstrates what co-operation will do, and aftctr all i if getting to- ! getlier as we have done this week, and working for the industries of the state, that will make Utah the big manufacturing manufac-turing state of the west and Salt Lake City and Ogden tho big distributing eon- ( ters for the intermoiuitain country a ' condition which will assure prosperity to i all. j ' ' The luncheons given by different i manufacturers in Ogdeu have brought us closer together, and given us an insight into what the other fellow is doing. T considor this feature one of the happiest features of the week." j |
