Show SUBMARINE CHASES imiijTKi Verona, Belonging to Same Company as Ancona, Escapes Es-capes During Fog. MADRID, Nov. 20, via London, 1:35 p. m. A telegram received hero today gives a wireless message said to have been sent out by the Italian steamship Verona, stating that she was being pursued pur-sued by a large submarine with two periscopes. According to this telegram, the submarine sub-marine is accompanied by a steamer. The position of the Verona was giveu as latitude 40, longitude 6, off Cabopalo. A later wireless message from tho Verona Ver-ona states that she eluded the submarine in tbe fog. The telegram was received from the town of Soller, on Majoroa island, in the Mediterranean off the Spanish coast, 110 miles south of Barcelona. The Verona was scheduled to 6ail from (.ienoa November 0, touching at Naples November 10 and Palermo November 11 on her way to New York. No word of her sailing, however, baa been received. Latitude 40, longitude 6, is a point in the western Mediterranean about 110 miles west of Sardinia. The Verona is owned by tho Italia Societa di Navigaziono a Vapors, which also owned the Ancona, sunk recently' by a' submarine in the Mediterranean. She. has been engaged for several years in pacsenger service between New York and Italian ports. She is of 8261 tons gross, 482 feet long, and was built at Belfast in 1908. |
