Show , HUNDREDS STOP TO WATCH SEMAPHORE Pedestrians Risk Life and Limb to Observe Operation Opera-tion of Traffic Signal. I ' . Hundreds of pedestrians risked lives and limbs yesterday as ' they stopped flatfooted in the middle of the street at the intersection of Main and Second 6outh and stared at the traffic policeman police-man twirling a little semaphore to direct di-rect the movement of street cars and vehicles. The semaphore is an innovation on I the part of the police department to govern the movement of tratfie at street intersections with a view to preventing congestions and accidents. On two of the semaphore blades is the word I "Stop," and on the other two "Go." i All the traffic policeman has to do f to stand there all day and twirl the i lever that governs the blades and per-i per-i mlt the traffic to flow first on one i street and then on the other. Occasionally, as a diversion, he has to yell at, or chase down some unrnly individual or yell himself hoarse at I others who have failed to observe the s position of the semaphore. His main trouble yesterday was in keeping traffic ; moving. Pedestrians stopped wherever they happened to be to watch the sig-j sig-j nal and some of the vehicle drivers were i almost as furious. But there were no I injuries and no trouble except that -of ! keeping the pedestrians moving. Most persons expressed the belief that the ; signal filled a long-felt want and 'com- ' phed with its directions without pro- ' test. I The signal is there on trial. If it j Berves the purpose for which it is in- ; tended similar signals are to be placed at other intersections in the downtown t district. |
