While no stampede or big strikes have been tho feature of Alaska's spring awakening, the season shows a heavy increase in-crease In passengers and tonnage for northern ports. Legitimate business In various branches of Industry Is tho reason rea-son for the excellent showing, and while no advertising or exploitation has been carried on, yet the number of hard-rock prospectors who have gone Into tho country coun-try at this season Is tho largest in tho history of the territory. These men have been attracted by tho development of tho last two years In copper and quarts propositions, prop-ositions, and it Is anticipated that the present ueason will result in some highly important development in this branch of the mining industry. From a general standpoint, the change In climatic conditions throughout Alaska Is of more than passing interest. The weather has heon so mild that the winter win-ter dumps have been workod with great success, while work In all underground mines has been steadily pushed throughout through-out the year. News of the strike on Midnight creek In the Ruby district has been authenticated authenti-cated by Tollable mining men from Fairbanks. Fair-banks. The now district is being worked almost exclusively by formor residents of Fairbanks, several of whom have already al-ready made excellent showings In this new placer field. Following the pronounced success of the Bonanza mine at Kennecott, which has Just completed lta first year of shipping ores, many other properties along the Copper river promise to become early shippers of tho red metal. From Prince William sound ports, which Includes the output of the Copper river, aro now being be-ing sent out about 4000 Iods a month, much of this being very hlgh-grado ore. Again referring to the weather conditions, condi-tions, this will have an excellent effect upon the gold output In the older placer camps, notably Nome and the Fairbanks district, where. In the opinion of experienced ex-perienced miners of those districts, the total year's output will show a goodly Increase In-crease owing to the early working of the winter dumps. |
