During the late afternoon lea was served, the main rooms being bright with cheery grate fires and many sprin" flowers, and a bevy of guests gathering indoors to cnioy tea and a social visit. Later, at tho dinner, which preceded the dance, every available space was 111 e with the diucr.. and when all this was cleared awav a merry hour or so at dancing closed a very succcsstul onnninc day. The largest affair was a beautifully appointed dinner for a rroup. of vminc people given in the private dining room bv Miss Virginia Bcattv and Miss Cary Marshall m compliment to Miss Kvelvn Powers I'liarming visiting girl from Denver, who is the guest of Miss Margaret! Walker. The long pval table was gay with manv lights and its springlike decorations of pure white iunrniorites and ferns made the scene a verv love lv one. I 1 Mrs. Pauline Sands mitcrtaiucd a I pertv of her frinuds very p'lcasnutlv I '-"sterdav afternoon at tho Carriek I Mieater with a tea downtown follow- J ing. Tho afl'air was one of a series of ! such events planned by Mrs. Sands for I her friends. Several other matinee I parties were entertained. I It would seem from the latest ru- I mors about Mrs, Nicholas I-iongworth I that the fair A lira is iust as keen for I I teems that the attentious paid to u certain visitor from abroad were rather disconcerting to Mrs Loneworth, and at one large afl'air Hho decided to turii the lights in her own direction. So selecting se-lecting a skillful partner she did the real turkey trot into the very conter of the lights, as it were, and once more rained for herself tbo gaze of all beholders. There are still quite enough adorers of the "Roosevelt familv to keep the story from any sensationalism, sensational-ism, but it is recorded in some places, and mildlj- hinted in others that 'that occurrence shocked "Washington socictv to a considerable extent. One writer savs that the dance was so modified as to be perfectly dignified. What could it have been like? Maybe it was sim-plv sim-plv a twp-step or an old fashioned nolka. which, with the aid of the new -tyle of dress, -was mistaken bv the effete ef-fete easterners fora turkey trot. Miss Maude Adams spent tho time of her star in Salt Lake at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Isabel -M. Pitt on South Main street. Owing to the fact that Miss Adams's entire time and strength -were taken in her work there were no social functions for her during her stay, but after each porformnncc rnanv of her old friends were on hand to greet hor. Mrs. Pitt entertained a house party composed of Miss Adams ?PA n0C mother, Mrs. Annie Adams kiskndden, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Witch-or Witch-or and their little daughter. "I mado it especially for you and iu celebration of my twcnty-lifth birthday." "Well," ho remarked,- as ho tasted it. "1 must say it has kept remarkably woll.'- k Mr. and Mrs. Karl Spinner entertained enter-tained a party of their closest friends last evening at a most delightful dinner din-ner with cards following, tho affair having been arranged by Mrs. Spinner as a surprise for tho host and iu celebration cele-bration of his birthday. Many good wishes were extended in tho congratulations congratula-tions and a delightful evening was passed in the hospitable home. And now to secure something absolutely abso-lutely new in the realm of fashion, dc- signers have dovised two styles of trains to evening gowns, which are said to be enjoying a limited crazo in tho most ultra-fashionable circles of the east. One is a lizard design, the end of the train tapering down to a point iu exact imitation of tho tail of a lizard, and to add to tho spectacular effect the train is made of some sort of material to give at least a suggestion of the dim colored, swiftly moving little animal, ani-mal, whose caudal appendage is thus copied bv the designer. The other train is shaped like tlio tail of a fish, and its two points,. or rather its double ttninl 1 u r.vrr1 v.Mtl, ciri!fa 2hinr ntwl Tishy in the extreme. Poor helpless things, they can't oveu keep their own designs in tails from tho monster fashion. fash-ion. For two years now we have had all sorts of tilings belonging to the barnyard fowls for wenring apparel, but the day has come for deep sea designing, de-signing, and it will bo only a step to the jelly fish state. 1 Mrs. .1. Charles Ross was tho hostess! lOHiHinj Ol .1 'UIJ HUIIUH 111 lllUlllll informal luncheon at tho Bransford for a half-dozen of hor friends, the guests enjoying a matinee party at tho Gar-rick Gar-rick following the luncheon. A delightful affair of yesterday was tho luncheon at tho McMillan homo eiven by Mias McMillan and Miss Aline McMillan in complimnnt to Misa Evelvn Powers, who is a guest at the Wnlk'er home. The table was 2orPcous with I its rich decorations of American Beauties Beau-ties and white sweet peas, a high elus-I elus-I tr of the deep toned flowers filling I thy central part. The guests, besides , Miss Powers and Miss Margaret Wal-! Wal-! ker were Miss Margaret McCjuro, Miss 'Margaret Dunn. Miss Ednn Dunn. Miss Loreen Learv. Miss Mary Marshall, 1 Miss t,:trv Marshall, Miss Virginia Beatty, Mrs. Paul Key scr, Mrs. John II. Holland of Fort Douglas and Mrs. Alice Goodwin Savage. Lieutenant . and Mrs. Philip G. Wrightuon entertained a parti' of friends last oveniug ut their quarters at Fort Douglas in compliment to Mrs. 0. B. Meyer, who is visiting Mrs. W. W. Trimmer. This rooms were bright with yellow jonquils and five" tables of bridge were played. A delicious supper sup-per wus served. The guests were raaiu-lv raaiu-lv people of the garrison, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Foster, Miss Adams, -Mr. and Mrs. Trimmer and Mrs. Meyer being the only town guests included. Again the fashions in dancing have changed. A few months ago one might look over a danco floor and seo a few couples say a half-dozen at most dancing some form of tho newest crazo in dancing, rag dances. Now the few who wore not skillful dancers of the "rag" fiances were conspicuous and not much admired at tho big dancing event of the week. The most dignified matrons (there wore only a few ma-trons ma-trons there, aud. thoy were of courso dignified) were just as enthusiastic as others, nor wore tho halls of culture shocked to any noticeable extent by the fact that there was no trying out with a few steps of the fofbiddcu movements, move-ments, for the whole Texas Tommy was done in all its fierceness. Now rio one can afford to bo badly out of. tho prevailing pre-vailing fashion, aud so the few who were not really in it arc planning all sorts of fine things for the noxt few weeks in the way of .slumming parties. Heretofore slumming parlies have been either for the purpose of shocking some one, or from the high-brow motive, of doing good to some one else. Hereafter Here-after slumming parties will bo conducted conduct-ed on truo, utilitarian principles, and great results arc expected. Monday night will sec such an audience audi-ence at the Garrick theater as that popular pla house has 'soldom hold, a great many friends having arranged parties to oajoy together especially the new plav by Mis. Martha Roylo Palmer, "The l5anger Signal." The mombers of the Saturday "Night club are going in a body, another party is made up of friends from the Fifth East Eotel and numerous other groups of friends will be seen iu larger or smaller parties. par-ties. Although Monday uight is to be a special society night, there are numerous nu-merous parties planned for the whole week aud until the last performance. Mrs. .7. M. Callow will entertain the seniors of Rowland hall with a matinee party on Sntnrday afternoon and a tea at the Hotel Utah later, arid the same day Mrs. W.
