Show Feud Chief Is Shot 5 d & Breathitt Is Scene Edv& ri C aril & Kmv Wounded From Ambush for the Second' Time Within Last Two Years. Special to The Trlhunc. LEXINGTON, Ky., May 4. Edward Callahan, the last of the famous feudists feud-ists of Breathitt county, was shot and perhaps fatally wounded whilo sunuing himself on tho steps of his store at Crockcttsville today. He is being rushed to Lexington for medical treatment. Callahan was formerly sheriff of Breathitt county, and, in leaguo with Judgo J. E. Hargis, arrested and brought to trial almost anybody he pleased. To those favoring tho Hargis-Callahan Hargis-Callahan clau, Judge Hargis would deal out very light punishment, but to all those who were known to oppose the idens of Hargis aud Callahan, tho full extent of the law was given. Shot Two Years Ago. The .ex-sheriff had perhaps raoro enemies ene-mies in Jackson and Breathitt counties than an- other man, and tho bullet which will probably end his career came from ambush on the side of the mountain which his store faces. Callahan Calla-han was standing in about the samo place ho was wheu he was shot two years ago, and the assassins were sc-crotcd sc-crotcd in about tho same spot ou the mountain side. There is no clue to the murderer or murderers, Callahans name has been a terror throughout tho Breathitt feud reglous over sinco tho assassination of Dr. D. B. Cox iu April, JD02. Cox was a witness wit-ness in a caso against oiie of Hargis'a friends. Has Many Enemies. In July of tho same 3'car James Cox-ri Cox-ri II, one of tho opposing feudists,, mot death mysteriously, and in May, 1903, James B. Marcnm. was shot while going from his house to the court house iu Jacksou to try a case. His widow sued Hargis, who was very wealthy, for $100,000, but tho caso nover came to trial, through tho Hargis influonce. Callahau has been arrested several times, but always managed to go free, although his trials have made big inroads in-roads in his fortune. Callahan know be had ninny enemies, but recently expressed ex-pressed the opinion that the feud spirit was dead in Breathitt. Shooting Is Mystery. LEXINGTON, Ky., May 4.
