Show BODY OF COL, flSTOR Former Wife Sends Wreath, but Does Not Attend the Funeral Ceremonies. NEW YORK, May 4. The body of Colouol John Jacob Astor was laid at rest todaj' with simple ceremonies in tho Astor vault in Trinity cemetery on Washington Heights. It was brought here ou a special train from Bhine-cliff, Bhine-cliff, ou tho Hudson, where funeral services woro held at noon in the little rough stone Episcopal church of the Messiah, of which Colonel Astor was for sixteen years a warden. These services, also of the simplest kind, were conducted by the Bcv. Ernest Saunders, pastor of tho church, and tho Rev. "William T. Manning, rector of Trinity church here, and were attended by relatives and friends of Colonel Astor, As-tor, residents of Khineciiff. together with employees of Colonel Astor at KhincclifC and at Newport, about one I hundred in all. All the church bells in the pretty Hudson village tolled us tho funoral cortege took its way from tho Astor mansion to the little church, whose altar was banked with many floral offerings, including, it was said, a wreath of roses from the Prince of Wales. Tho coffin of the dead millionaire wns itsolf completely com-pletely covered with a pall of orchids. In the carriago woro Vincent Astor and his sister, Muriel, Colonol Astor 's children, chil-dren, Mrs, Madeline Forco Astor, his widow, her sister, Knthorino Force, and Mr. and Mrs, William Force, hor father and mother, Mrs. Ava Willing Astor, tho colonel's colo-nel's former wifo, did not attend the coremouics, but sent a wreath. The Rev Dr. Manning said the final words committing Colonel Aster's body to the earth. The casket was placed iu the vault directlv abovo that; of his father. |
