Tho house today ordered an investigation of the conduct of Judgo Robert W. Arch bald of tho commerce court to dotormine whother or not ho should be impoachod on chargos that ho 'has used bi3 office of-fice to procuro favors from railroads. The inquiry will Jjo mado by tho committee on tho judiciary, which ia charged by the resolution in investigate investi-gate whother Judgo Archbald "has been guilty of an impeachable offenso,' of-fenso,' and to report its conclusions and recommendations to the house. This action followed tho receipt by tho houso of a message from President Taft responding to a resolution adopted adopt-ed several days ago and tho submission to tho judiciary committee by Attorney General Wiekersham of the Tosult of his investigation of tho charges. The president said the allegations wore brought to his attention by Commis sioner Meyer of tho interstate commerce com-merce in February. Ho instructed tho attorney general to make an investigation investiga-tion and placo ,tho chargos before tho judiciary committee if thoy were "established "es-tablished sufficiently to justify proceeding pro-ceeding on them." As a result of a careful inquiry it was tho judgment of tho attorney general that the papers in the caso should bo transmitted to tho committeo as a basis for further investigatiou. Acting on the message of the president pres-ident and the report of tho attorney general, Chairman Clayton of tho judiciary ju-diciary committeo consulted tho leaders lead-ers of tho houso and his colleagues on the committeo with the result that he introduced before the closo of tho day a resolution authorizing the inquiry. Tho resolution was adopted unanimously. unani-mously. Upon its prissngc, Mr. Clayton issued subpoenas for a number of witnesses. wit-nesses. IIo declined to state who "would bo called. The judiciary committee will moet Tuesday for an exhaustive examination of the papers submitted by tho attorney gonoral.
