Contracts for sidewalks and street paving pav-ing in the total sum of nearly $200,000 wero awarded at the meeting of tho board bf public works .Friday afternoon. Tho sidewalk improvements will cost 1vl7S,071.40, nnd the street paving $5,-079.11. $5,-079.11. The James Kennedy Construction Construc-tion compain' was awarded tho contract for tho sidewalks, which will be laid in tho Second and Third wards, and will aggregate about forty miles in length. The compan3' is now finishing about fifty miles of walk in the First ward. 3onuodv's bid on sidewalk extension 12G in the" Second ward was$.12.G0G loss than tho city engineer's cstimato of the cost and Avas $24,000 lower than the next: bidder's figures. On extension 12S in the Third ward the Kennedy bid was $20,000 below the engineer's estimate and $10,000 bolow thwucxt bidder. The members of the board were very much pleased that the bids wore so low and expressed tho opinion that the city would got some very cheap work. There wero only three bidders on the work iu the Second ward, while there were seven bidders on tho Third ward contract.
