Show LIQUOR LICENSES GRANTED. The Council )md its special meeting on Thursday evening, granting the twenty-four licenses which had been except nil from the schedule of licenses as reported by the Council committee. These were excepted from the vole of the Council confirming the granting of the 102 licenses on which tho commit lee "had made a favorable report, and which were granted by the affirmative vote of the Council on tho first night when the matter came up. ft was entirely proper for the Conn cil, in pursuance of the report of the committee, to hold up these twenty-four licenses. Tt was necessary lo do so in order that the Council should be ns surcd that Ihe provision of Ihe or dinanco requiring that tho applicants for licenses must be the owners of the premises or of the saloon fixtures wu complied with. This to establish good faith, and to fix a primary responsibility responsi-bility for the immediate good order in tho premises and the carrying out of such regulations as the Council has established. es-tablished. Tho secondary accountability of fho brewers in tho background was, of course, ample for the final responsi bility, but the primary responsibility was fixed by ordinance in the owners of the premises or of the fixtures. 1 1 seems lo have been a matter of doubt us to what extent the ordinance had been clearly complied with in this matter, mat-ter, and the Council was not only just i tied in making the investigation it did. but it was clearly its duty to make such inquiry. The results have been favorable and satisfactory alj around; first to the pttblic, which had a' right, to bo fully assured that the ordinance had been complied with in good faith; second, to the saloon keepers in af fording evidence of their full compliance com-pliance with the ordinance. Jt will be remembered that the op position newspapers undertook to gel up a sympathetic howl for the Iwentv-four Iwentv-four saloon keepers whose applications were being inquired into by the Council. Coun-cil. This sympathetic strike of the opposit ion newspapers was clearly a j fake and burlesque. lis only purpose j was for political effect, it ignored the ! requirements of the ordinance as to whether it was duly complied with or j not. Those sympathetic howlers ap i pearcd to have no regard for the or- j dinance, and to have no concern whether , it; was to be obeyed; all that they j wanted to do was to get the political ! support and adherence of these twenty- j four liquor establishments, whether thev i had qualified according lo the law and ordinance or not, lwas as mean and destestable a piece of political skuldug- gery as has developed at any time in the corrupt dealings of the church party with the liquor interests, and shows the frantic desire of the church interests to continue the deal which was made by the "Federal .bunch" last, year in allying tho church interests with the liquor interests, and that made such n tremendous uproar when the corrupt bargain was disclosed. "Whether the church will be able to maintain its deal with the liquor interests in-terests this year or not, has to be developed, de-veloped, but one thing is certain, that the church parly pr.oss is quite willing to continue that deal this without regard re-gard to law, ordinance, common dc cency or public sentiment. |
