Show ! DUAL TRACK ; MEET SATURDAY ; IL of 0. and Provo fo Contest I. i For First Time in Five Years j the Teams Will Battle. While tho University Crowd Is Confident, Confi-dent, Fact Kcmains That Provo Will Be There. I Noxt Saturday tho University of Utah will meet Provo !n a dual track meet for the first time In live years, and, confident as tho locals nrc of victory, It nevertheless remains a fact that Provo will hnvo a look In. This year tho nucleus of last year's 1 Provo team Is back, other strong recruits ( havo been added, tho athlotog havo worked and their energies havo not been misdirected, for a biff Michigan couch has had their training In charge. Moreover. ' tho Provokes havo had tho advantage of : splendid gymnasium training all winter, I whllo the locals havo had to content thom- ( , selves with occasional workouts in their llttlo "recitation-room" gymnasium. Unl-1 Unl-1 vcrfilty track men havo also been somo- ( what handicapped by tho failure to got the track .Into condition for hard work , until just last week, and oven now tho cinders need rolling and cementing. 1 Contest Interesting1. But the contest will be an interesting one, and whatever tho result.-will be well , worth seeing. Many State records will go flying and probably some' world records ' , will be smashed. Last year, It will be remembered re-membered that Adams came within a couplo of Inches of turning the trick In the pole vault. This year ho and n thousand j Provo enthusiasts declare that ho will. Already ho Is skirting around that high 1 mark In practice, and as he alwava docs better In a meet, his chances for doing 1 twelve feet are encouraging. He has tho form down, and Manager Riser, who has ' Just returned from Provo, savs that ho goes over with all the grace and ease of a world champion. Provo students are thoroughly thor-oughly enthusiastic over tho prospects of the meet. When tho news was announced to them In chapel they cheered and cheered. But whllo they are enthusiastic they nre not boasting, but working. They arc In to win. IT. o TJ. Confident. But the confidence and enthusiasm of the Provokes Is fully equalled and per-i per-i haps surpassed by that of the locals. "With I many of last year's best men back and i 1' : somo splendid new material that showed Its worth In tho recent class track meet from which to pick, victory seems certain. cer-tain. And then thcro Is another big factor fac-tor Maddock la coach. And as long ns ho stands at tho helm the word "defeat" Is not to be found In tho University h dictionary. dic-tionary. Ills success on tho track seems only to be equalled by his achievements on tho gridiron. Especiallly Is ho strong In tho weights, as this was his forte at Michigan. Whllo thero ho held tho championship cham-pionship In both tho hammer and shot, but was finally bested In the latter ovent by the much heralded Rose. Bennlon Star Performer. Bennlon, tho captain of tho team, will bo tho star performer In tho weights. At tho present tlmo Bennlon holds "tho Stato record for tho hammer, and as he Is developing de-veloping splendid form In the shot ho may succeed In carrying off the honor In Jumping lina always been tho University's Uni-versity's weak spot this year It will be both tho weight ovents this year. Stoffcn-son Stoffcn-son Is back at school again and Is making mak-ing good progress with tho shot. Jasl week In prucllco ho put it thlrly-nlno feet. Other men who are doing good work with the weights aro Swapp. C. P. Russell, BoIbo and Cuddy Russell. In this event the University Is well supplied. Whitney Heads Bunch. In the sprints the University will be equally as strong as Inst year. Whitney heads tho bunch of speedsters, and can be depended upon to hold his own analnnt ail comers. Last year ho did tho 100-yard dash In ton seconds ilat, and his admlrora nre looking for him to cvon lower that mark as the season progresses. Then, l ho ru Is his speedy teammate. Harry Moore: Allan Spencer, Dale Parke and a score of other right fast men. Provo Man a Sprinter. Hero will be tho hard light with Provo, for their coach, Tcotzel, Is a sprint man, and in his undergraduate years at Michigan Michi-gan ho was tho chief of sprinters. The question Is, has he the material or can ho develop materlnl in one season to compete com-pete successfully with the fusjL bunch at the University? I.aat year Provo was weak In thesu events, and Just now all kinds of rumors aro floating around up at the Unlvorslty ns to the dark horses and surprises they will spring here. Instance Events. In tho distance ovents tho University is also well supplied. There Is the old war borne, Jimmy -Wade, to bogln with, his fast teammate, Dell Judd. and also John II time, who carried off the honors In tho recent cross-country club meet. Tlicsvi are mile and half milo men, but there Is a good stock of quarter mllers. Butler, who defeated Provo's mighty Stalllngs fn Inst year's meet, leads here. Pitt Is also good, and Ncal, Judd and Swapp will prove, better as the season progresses, the cross-country running, which has been so popular at the school during the past few months, has developed some of these men and made the others stronger, better and moro enduring runners. Utah will be strong In these events. Hurdle Events Brighter. Prospects in hurdle events looked rather blue at first, but lately things havo begun to brighten up a little In Coach Maddocks opinion. Butler, who has been working particularly hard for those events, has now mastered thc difficult hurdle stride 4JiC 110 V1I'0,!n'ss.e,, , much in tho next month as ho has In the past four weeks hu will break a State record or two Slit. I?10 ood here, as Is Huntsman! Both of these men won out In tho recent class track meet In theso events, and made good time and showed good form. ' their slronghold. Swapp. the great all-around all-around athlete. Is MVy living up to tho ejrpectallons of his most hearty admirers and especially Is this so In his Jumping. Recently in practice he broke tho State record for tho high Jump, and In Friday s class track meet he sprung the surprise 2.il?Bi daiy hyr J"mpllig tw.cnty-ono feot eight Inches. In tho high Jump ho will meet a worthy competitor in Adams. Tho Provo boy is always thero when It comes to tho flerco light, and ho hns tho courago and stlclulty that wins. Year after year ho has coino to Salt Jako and surprised hlniKelf and his friends by his splendid work in the crisis He can ulwayn go Just far enough to boat tho other fellow, and what will bo tho result when theso two giants meet only tlmo can toll. But It will bo a flerco struggle. Pole Vault In tho polo vault tho University plna Its-faith Its-faith In Ouddy Russell; Provo In Adams. Last year theso two plucky athletes fought a royal battle, and Adams only won after making a Jump that Is seldom equalled. Russell Is too heavy to properly compcto In this event against tho slender Adams, for ho only wolghs ono hundred and seventy-odd pounds, a llttlo load to tako cloven and one-half feet up in tho air. Both schools havo other men who compete In theso ovents, but theso giants aro so much their peers that Utile Is over heard of them. |
