Member of Executive Committee Says Way Will Be Found to Reply to the Reply. iNEW YORK, April 22. The letter sont to agents of tho Equltabl L-lfe Assurance society yesterday by Vice-President Hyde was the subject of a meeting held at the Equitable building by those of the agents who have remained in tho city Mr. Hyde's letter explained why ho had not heeded their request for hl3 resignation, and today's meeting was to decide whether wheth-er they ought to make a reply. After some discussion It was decided that as their convention had adjourned without day Thursday, at the Hotel Savoy, tho meeting could not be reopened unless all of tho agents wore present. No reply was framed. One of tho committee which presented the conference's request to Mr. Hyde, said today: Alexander Not the Instigator. "It is not true that Mr. Alexander was tho Instigator of the present controversy. One year ago Mr. Hydo himself sought to have tho board of directors elect the president pres-ident and authorize tho latter to appoint the other ofllcers of the society. My assertion as-sertion about this Is substantiated by the official records of the meeting or the board of directors when Mr. Hyde sought to put his project through. Will Not Satisfy Policy Holders. J. "V. Estcs of Chicago, one of the secretaries sec-retaries of tho conference of tho general agents and managers, sold Mr. Hydo's lottcr, Instead of satisfying tho policyholders, policy-holders, would mako them mora dotcr-mlnod dotcr-mlnod than ever that tho first vice-president should retlro. Mr. Estcs declared thnl Mr. Hydo was not- at all donnlto In his answer to tho general agents and tho managers, rc-llcctlntf rc-llcctlntf tho lew8 of tho policy-holders. "Mr. Hyde's presumed answer to tho other oth-er side," said Mr. Estcs, "Is not an an-owcr an-owcr to tho policy-holders and does not tell them what thoy want to hear." Built on False Pretenses. "Mr. Estcs added-: "If tho 5tD,0O),000 assets as-sets and $80,000,000 uurplu.s of 'Iho Equitable Equita-ble belong, not to tho policy-holders, but to the stockholders, then tho, EqulUiblo business has beon built uponj falno pre-tfr,nc-s and amends and legal redress will havo to bo made to the pollcy-holdors- "But as to what we. can do now In tho way of a reply to Mr. . Hyde's absurd brief. I don't know. The convention has adjourned. Tho Hyde reply. -In my estimation, esti-mation, must simply bo Inserted In tho minutes of tho meeting, which are soon to be printed, and sent to all the members mem-bers ot the association. Mr. Hyde Was Foxy. "In that respect Mr. Hydo was foxy. He Got in tho lost word and thero Is no way for tho convention to get back at him for a year." Joseph Bowi.s of Baltimore, member of the exccutlvo commlttco of the National Association of Equltablo Agents, said today: to-day: "I am going to tlnd some way to got up an adequate reply, without waiting for the next annual mooting of tho association associa-tion Such arrogant assumption of ono man power in a comp&ny that has obtained ob-tained all Its business by representing Itself to be a mutual concern I never beheld be-held beforo. Will Get Up a Reply. Doesn't the man roa'lzo that the general agents have thousands of dollars' worth of assets tied up In futuro rcvonues of contracts which would be worthless If Hyde continued his hurtful notoriety? Wo will get up a reply all right -ve won't lot that Hydo leltor be the la3t , word on this subject. i |
