Show CONTRACTS FOR CRUISER. Naval Board Recommends Acceptance of Bids for Three. "WASHINGTON, April 21'. The Naval Board of Construction recommended to tho department tho acceptance of tho bids of the Fore River company nt Qulncy, Mass., for the building of two of the scout cruisers and tho Bath Iron works, of Bath. Mi-., for tho third. They recommend recom-mend that two of th cruisers ho ntted with turblno engines and tho third with reciprocating engines. Tho bids for the proposed cruisers were opened at tho Navy department lnst Saturday. Sat-urday. In all lx bidders entered tho field, and tho greatest interest was manifested mani-fested In tho reading of the bids. Under tho law only two ships could be awarded to any ono concern. The Fore River Shipbuilding Ship-building company submitted a number of bids, ono to build n cruiser according to the department's plans for Jl.CS0.O0O. or two at $l,Fr.7.0Cl each. For ships with turbine tur-bine installation their prices ranged from S1.-IC8.000 on the basis to bo awarded two shlpfl. lo $1,572,000 for ono. Tho Bath Iron work.t also submitted a number of proposals offering to build two cruisers, department's plans, at $1,723,000 each. For turbine installation thoy. submitted sub-mitted prices ranging from two ships at $1,573,000 each to one ship at $1,KS0,000. |
