Show HOW TO GROW STRONG.' Power and Health Through Progressive Exercise. By George Elliott Flint. With an introduction by Austin Flint, M. D. The Baker & Taylor Company, publishers, New York. The author of this practical and sensible- work . advocates, and properly we think, tho heavy exercises to develop strength. He does not condemn the light exorcises, but commends them In their proper place; but to tnako musclea strong, In order that great strain may be resisted resist-ed by them, or without Injury put upon them, heavy exercises are compulsory. This Is certainly true. Tenacity and endurance en-durance to a limited degreo arc to be expected ex-pected by long-continued light exercises, but tho. building up of strength Is by the big weights. But to bo both strong and quick, a man must combine light with heavy work.. Thoauthor of this work, however, holds to . tho heavy work for permanence and tho best results. He argues ar-gues that tho strongest 'men arc healthiest healthi-est and .most symmetrical; and 'that the exercise' that "makes ' them strong and healthy cannot possibly bo light exercise. He contends f6r symmetrical development; develop-ment; for the exercise of the whole body, and for as great a variety as possible In tho exercises. There arc twenty-nine artistic plates, showing positions ' and achievements, and . the publishers havo dqno their, full duly by the work, which is a radical departure In its teaching teach-ing from most of the current opinion, and will no doubt promoto opposition; but that It occupies tho true position wo have not the slightest doubt. |
