It has been a source of keen regret to tho management of the Symphony concerts con-certs that from a. financial standpoint they have been a failure. From tho artistic ar-tistic standpoint, while they havo not. been all that could bo desired, "they havo been far and away head of what might have boon expected in a city o thin size, and Salt Lake is to bo congratulated upon up-on having a director of Arthur Shepherd's r.hlllty and fifty such musicians as make up tho orchestra. Although as stated at the beginning of the article, tho concerl3 have not been a financial success, the mnagem-?ni Is not discouraged and Is already al-ready preparing for the season of lOKi-G. Subscription blanks nre to be sent out Immediately Im-mediately to secure further additions to tho guarantee fund so generously given last year, to enable the management to Insure another season of concerts and If possible enable them to bring some outside out-side artists to appear with the orchestra. Too much cannot bo said In praise not only of the director of tho orchestra and the musicians belonging to It, but the soloists so-loists who havo appeared from time to lime artists, all of them, and their work, as well as that of the orchestra, will lie a delightful memory for many a day. And speaking of the concert's being a financial failure, (hero may bo a word of hope In tho following clipping from the New York Post concerning tho Philadelphia Philadel-phia orchestra: "It costs about S10O.0O0 a year to maintain main-tain the Phll.'ulelphla orchestra; salaries. ?i,000; soloists and conductors, S15.000; rental, $10,000; advertising, music, etc., $10,-000. $10,-000. Scant public support was given to the orchestra until the season of 1C03-OI. in which vear tho series of fourteen concerts showed! an Increase of $0000 in tho receipts. thlK being sufficient to pay three weeks' selarles to the musicians on the scale then prevailing. Remarkable advance in receipts-is the 'record for the season of liOI-Oo, the figures being an Increase of Sll.riOO over lfOI-05. The total number of paid admissions during tho season was 50,-SCJ, 50,-SCJ, divided with 23.S31 at the evening and 2i!,0SS at the afternoon concerts. From this it is evident that the orchestra cannot can-not be made a self-supporting body for yetrs lo come. An admission fee of $2 per concert would be necessary on tho basis of last, season' ticket sale. As a matter of fact, the prices at the orchestra mn from a special rate of 25 cents to 51. CO. Including the boxes " At the Tabernacle. A special programme will be given at the Tabernacle beginning at 2 o'clock. Prelude Great organ Handel Mr. J. J. McClcllan. "Unfold Ye Portals Everlasting," from "The Redemption" Gounod Tabernacle choir. E. Stephens, director. Chorus "Hallelujah" (Messiah) ..Handel Tabernacle Choir. Doublo Chorus "The Lord Now Victorious," Vic-torious," Easter chorus from "Cav- allerla Rusjicana" Mascagnl 'Tabernacle Choir. Postlude from "TannhauGcr" Wagner Mr. McClcllan. Young Pupils Please. . A very great deal of pleasure was afforded af-forded the" audience at tho First Congre-. pallonal church last Tuesday evening by the two young pupils of Mrs. Alberta Dcrsham Snodgraas. the Misses Kate Nt-son Nt-son and Marie Warhurton. The programme pro-gramme was a difficult one for girls of their years, but they not only played the entire programme without notes, but Interpreted In-terpreted each number In such a way as to call forth tho hearty approval of tho audience. Recalls were numerous, tho Allegro Al-legro from Sonata No. 23 In F major (Haydn), by Miss Warburton, and the Mtnuet (Padcrcwskl) by Miss Nelson being be-ing tho favorite numbers. Howard Har-rold's Har-rold's fine voice was heard to advantage In the "Queen of tho Earth" by Plnsutl, and he was obliged to respond to an en-cere. en-cere. ' ' Preparing1 a Cantata. The choir of the Central Christian church Is actively engaged ljohcarslng- the cantata. "Rent," which Uiey will give. Thursday evening. May -I. The composer Is Alfred R. Gaul, whose "Holy City" the choir gave creditably a year ago "Rent" abounds In beautiful choruses, solos, duets and trios. |
