Death found Jeremiah Lowney and Horace Kollcy trapped In the bottom of a wlnzo In the Columbus Consolldnteu mlno at Alta Friday afternoon. The men wcro caught whllo trying vainly to cscnpo from tho explosion of ten shots which they had sot a few moments before-Lowney's before-Lowney's body lay a mangled heap, hut when they found Kelloy ho was standing at the bottom of tho winze talking to the corpse. A Coroner's Jury summoned tho night of the accident exonerated the mlno ofilelals from any blame. A few moments later a frightful explosion sent rocks to tho mouth of the winze Miners bollevo that the ladder had been loosened in some way, and that the men had not time to tlx the rope holding It. They were trapped. By the time they left tho ladder the main fuse was consumed nnd ten short ones vero burning. Fought to Escape. Death came to them as thoy fought to escape from the hole. They must have worked madly as tho fuses burned their way to tho sticks of giant powder, only a Tew feot from their sputtering sparks, too late to put all of them out. Kceley Found Alive. Immediately after the explosion men went to iho foot "of the winze. Lownoy was dead and fearfully mangled,. Kelley stood ravins, blood streaming over his face and shoulders. Ho talked to the dead body. And when the other miners asked him what was tho matter ho' mumbled: mum-bled: "I'm waiting for tho other three shots to go off." Died on Way Here. They were taking him to the town when he died. The accident happened a few moments before 4 o'clock. The relatives of both men, who were members of tho Butte Miners' union, have been notified of the tragedy. The members of the Coroner's Jury were miners from neighboring neigh-boring properties.
