The writer of ,his book had quite' unusual un-usual facilities for seeing Alaska under the most -favorable circumstances, and for gathering data useful to him In making the book. He was with the special .subcommittee .sub-committee Of Senators who went to Alaska Alas-ka In the summer of 1903 to look the country coun-try over and determine' what ought to be done by way of legislation for It. The trip occupied about ten weeks, and carried the party not only through the Interior, along tho whole course of. tho Yukon river, but to many places on the coast and nmong the Islands not readily acccs-ble acccs-ble by the ordinary means of travel. And then, every ono turned out:! to sec tho party. Whatever there was of Interest to see, was shown. All possible Information was put at the disposal of tho party: every ono was anxious to ''fill Iheiri up." Thus ample material, both In fact, anecdote, anec-dote, description, and picture was available avail-able to the author in getting up his work. It must he said, too, that ho haa made good use of his material, and we have hero a boolc of the most vivid Interest. It presents tho story of Alaska as It Is, tho riches, tho resources, tho production, tho prospcctlvo conditions, all In a most attractive at-tractive light. The opening of tho country Is progressing with surprising rapidity, and the people nrc branching out into permanent location and establishment in a surprising way. Tho bringing in of tho reindeer Is shown" to "have been a master stroke, destined to havo a most Important Influence upon the country.
