Show TO REOPEN WORKINGS IN PILOT KNOB DISTRICT Special to The Tribune. CALIENTE, Xev., May 19. Harvey McNulty and Joseph Chilvers, mining mi-ning men from the Smllklmeon country, British Columbia, were in camp yesterday, on route to southern Nevada, via tho San Pedro to its present pres-ent terminus, thence southwest across the desert as far as Eldorado canyon at the head of tho navigation of the Colorado river. They are looking up some clalma in which 'they are interested, inter-ested, known as the Forty rrroup, near Pilot Knob mountain, and expect to reopen re-open some of tho old workings on their claims. These claims were discovered many year3 ago by early prospectors and Mr. McNulty sayo that In excavating' for a mill sit near one of their tunnels, many truces of pre-historic mining were dls-co'ered. dls-co'ered. Among other things uncovered uncov-ered were several ston hammers, a heavy copper mortar and stone pestle, and several implements resembling shovelB with short handles made from an extremely hard wood not unlike the scrub mahogany, which, however, is not now found growing in this district. They also found, some eight years ago, In their first work, four small Ingots of gold, encrusted -with small particles of grit and sand, although no molds for melting it,, wero discovered. The claims which comprise the group are Jupiter, Mercury, Venusf Saturn and Mars, free gold, and the AJax. Hercules and Qulen Sabe gold-copper claims. Mr. Chllverm who Is part owner of some of the richest gold-copper claims near Greenwood, B. C, says that he anticipates, an-ticipates, now that the San Pedro is an accomplished fact, opening up his Nevada Ne-vada properties at depth, and if values come up to their expectations, will put in a large mill for his free gold ore Just below Eldorado ferry on the Colorado river, a convenient distance from his mines. j . Cyrus Beard of the law firm of Beard & Spaulding, came In from his home In Evanston, Wyo., yesterday and went to Moapa to see his son, who is at present ill with typhoid fever, but is graually convalescing, Mr. Beard will remain In camp for a few -days until his son is able to be removed to his home in Evanston. V "Work is steadily progressing on the Blue Bird tunnel and It Is now in about 1,25 feet running to crosscut a twelve-fcot twelve-fcot ledge which crops out for several hundred feet along the strike of ledge at surface. The claim Is located close to townslte of Caliente. and it 1s the Intention In-tention of owners to crosscut the ledgo at a depth of about 100 feet, and If values val-ues show up at this point drift on ledge northerly and after blocking out sufficient suffi-cient ore to warrant It. build a mill at a point close to mouth of tunnel, as water can easily be obtained In sufficient suffi-cient quantities for milling at a depth of from fifteen to twenty feet from the surface. There are now more than sixty women wo-men in camp, wives of business men and railroad men, making the town take on quite a domestalc appearance. Mike Cronln, who had his foot mashed on the road last week, -was sent to the Holy Cross hospital at Salt Lake City today for treatment |
