Show MUST WE DRINK- MUDDY WATER! From the Now York Herald Dr. Harvey W. Wiley of tho committee commit-tee on food standards, in the course of discussion on the color of a sample jar of "syrup," Is quoted as saying that "tho mere color of water does not amount to much": that "perfectly clear water is often the most deadly"; also "you can drink muddy water with perfect per-fect safety, because germs cannot live in mud, but they can live in clear water even after It has been filtered." Those certainly are very remarkable statements and nro well calculated not only to upset all our old doctrines concerning con-cerning water standards, but to giveour commissioners all sorts of new excuses for quieting the fears of such as are not able to purchase the bottled products of approved brandB. At least It should forever put to rest the constant complaints com-plaints against mud as a disease producing pro-ducing agency. Still there are very many who may fear it as much as they would microbes, and to suqh the opinion opin-ion of tho expert would not appeal with the force Intended. In any event tho average man will bo content to take his beverage unmixed and run the other risk. |
