Show Btfl. High Joins An Elite Group By DAVE VVTGHAM BOUNTIFUL Quiz time. This past spring the athletic program at Bountiful High joined a select few. Can you name what they accomplished? accom-plished? TRUE THEY won their second consecutive state soccer soc-cer crown, something only a couple of other schools have done. Yep, they won their first ever state baseball crown but that isn't what we're looking for. Need some more clues. Well only Davis High in the county has accomplished this goal. Besides these two Davis County Coun-ty schools only four others in the entire state can brag about this. BY WINNING the baseball crown the Braves became one of six schools to win state titles in the so called big three sports. Those being baseball, football and basketball. state. Dixie joined these schools in 1974 when the Flyers won the basketball crown. Prior to this they had won baseball in 1973 and football in 1970. THE ONLY other school to achieve this goal did it in the olden days. Well at least in the 60's. Highland won the basketball basket-ball title in 1979 but it was 1966 when the Rams won the baseball base-ball crown and 1963 when they claimed the football crown. There are many schools on the verge of joining this club. Well, actually there is one other school already in it. Judge Memorial won basketball basket-ball in 1980, football in 1973 but it was 1958 when they won baseball. TWO OTHER county schools are close. Clearfield won baseball in 1964 and basketball bas-ketball in 1967 but needs a football title to join. Viewmont has won the football crown in 1977 an the baseball title three different times but the Vikes have come up short in basketball. basket-ball. Others who are close include in-clude Bingham, who has no modern football crown, Provo needs football as does Hill-crest Hill-crest while Skyline in Salt Lake needs a baseball crown. YES SIR, not many schools in the state can brag about winning win-ning the big three and the fact that two of them come from this area says lot about the quality of athletes and coaches. It all began in 1969 when Bennie Mangus guided the likes of Larry Green, Craig Campbell, Steve Tibbs, Paul Spring, Cal Murri and Terry Orchard to the state basketball title when they knocked off favored fa-vored Logan. Then in 1979 Paul Waite took his football troops to the finals where they handed West a loss. For the sake of missing someone let's leave all the names off. THEN JUST a couple of weeks ago Phil Olsen led the so called young Braves to the state baseball title. Need some reminding about the others. Davis began in 1974,, modern day records, with a state football title. The Darts followed up with another football crown in 1976. Then in 1975 Mike Gardner had a club led by Dean Hunger, Scott Starkey and Scott Mounteer that went on to win the top honor on the basketball floor. IT WAS all topped off in 1977 when Kent Draayer guided the Darts to a baseball crown. The Darts have been close several other occassions but this was the big year. One has to go back to 1968 to get the West High school in this elite group. That's the year the Panthers claimed the state baseball title. In 1975 a young man named Scott Runia helped Clark Godfrey to the basketball basket-ball crown while Gene Plaga has seen three state football crowns in 1973, 1975 and this past year. LEHI HAS the distinction of doing it all this year. The Pioneers have won all three championships this school year to lay claim to being the best athletic program in the |
