Show Regional Ci Wants !)( Input u By MARK D. MICKELSEN BOUNTIFUL A handful of local government officiils, fearful of tip impacts of the MX missile on the Wasatch Front, turned once again to Gov. Scott Matheson Thursday and asked to be represented on the state MX board. SUNSET MAYOR Norm Sant, an MX committeeman committee-man for the Wasatch Front Regional Council, said a letter has been sent to the governor stating that if the MX board is speaking for the state, Wasatch Front communities must be included. The letter asks Governor Matheson to authorize additional representation from the five northern Utah counties belonging to the WFRC. THERE IS little doubt, said Mayor Sant. that if the MX missile comes to Utah the Wasatch Fronl will be affected. He said too much emphasis is being put on those direct impact areas in the southern portion of the state. Already, he said, two out of the three stages of the missile are being constructed in areas along the Wasatch Front. "THE WASATCH Front area is a key factor in the development," Mayor Sant told fellow councilmem-bers. councilmem-bers. If and when the missile comes to Utah, $40,000 of regional MX impact aid money will be funnelcd into the Wasatch Front area, according to Sant. The mayor said the money is appreciated, but $40,000 "is only a small piece of the cake." THOUGH the council has received no word from , the governor on the representation issue. Mayor Sant said, "The governor's office and Ken Olsen (MX information coordinator) seemed to agree that our biggest problem is to get involved and be heard." But the governor may have some difficulty making a decision on represcnlation. According to Sant. when the MX board was organized the architects of the program asked that the governor not interfere with the preceedings. IF A decision is not passed dow n by the governor, Utah's congressmen should be contacted, the mayor said. A decision on whether or not the controversial missile will be based in Utah and Nevada is expected sometime in July or August, Sant said. |
