Show By DAVE WIGHAM Several weeks ago the Davis School Board appointed Monte Jones the new head football coach at Viewmont High. MONTE has been with the Vikings as an assistant coach for four years. Prior to that time he was head coach at Emery High School for a year, and head coach at Middleton High in Idaho for two years. Coach Jones was raised in Medford, Ore. In high school he participated in football, wrestling and track. "I was never really that good at track though," he admits. AFTER high school he went to BYU and participated in football and wrestling. He pointed out that in his senior year the Cougars won the Western Athletic Conference football championship, at that time it was the first football championship the school had won. Monte played offensive guard for the Cougars, that team was led by Virgil Carter, the great quarterback from theY. FOLLOWING his playing days for the Cougars, Coach ' Jones remained at BYU to earn his master's degree. While working on his advanced ad-vanced degree Monte was a graduate assistant and aided in the freshman football program. So with a new coach next fall will the Vikings be doing anything different? "NOT really, basically we'll still run out of the Viking I, that's a tradition at the school and a good one. I like a lot of motion in the offense, try to get the defense to look at a variety of sets," he noted. One thing the coach is doing v differently next year is inviting invit-ing the sophomores to two a day drills at the beginning of the season. "DURING the summer we hold weight programs. This is not only to build the athlete physically but it gives the coach a chance to get to know his players better," he added. Some coaches don't like to have sophomores on the varsity var-sity but Coach Jones feels if they're good enough why not giye them a shot at the varsity. At the same time if he thinks a sophomore is good but not ready for the varsity he'll give him playing time in the sophomore game to develop. THE KEY to a successful team is execution according to the new head man. "Most schools run the same offense and defense every year, but yet they're successful. The reason is they have the kids that can execute." In past years the state playoffs were held at the high schools of the teams involved. Recently the High School Activities Ac-tivities Association moved all the games up to the University of Utah. HOW DOES a coach feel about the move? "Personally I love it, there's no home field advantage. It's a natural site, the sitting is much better for the fans. Overall it's great to play up there." The one bad thing about Coach Jones being named as head football coach is that he can no longer run the wrestling program. The Vikes have been strong in wrestling ever since Coach Jones took over. BUT LOOK on the bright side, with the success Monte Jones has shown in wrestling, it's a cinch the Vikes will be just as successful in football, dw |
