Educa-tion. MS. FOX, who taught one workshop last spring for DCE, emphasizes the historical his-torical significance of traditional tradi-tional pactchwork patterns in tier classes. "For over 200 years American women have been sewing into their quilts the history of the United States and the quality of their lives," wntes Ms. Fox. "With such patterns as 'Log Cabin,' 'Rocky Road to Kansas,' 'Freedom Star,' and 'Delectable 'Delec-table Mountains,' they have pieced scraps of cloth together to shape a national art form." MS. FOX will introduce four patterns ("Log Cabin," "Trip Around the World." "Grandmother's Flower Garden," Gar-den," and "Oak Leaf") in her workshop "Patchwork Patterns: Pat-terns: The Great American Art 1." She will lecture about the religious, economic and political origins of the quilt, the migration of patterns, applique and quilting. In addition, she will bring quilts from her own collection to illustrate her lectures. Each student in the workshop will work four blocks which may be used for pillows, wall hangings, or as a basis for, clothing or a quilt. MS. FOX will teach two sections of "Patchwork Patterns Pat-terns I," one for persons whose schedules permit five full week-day sessions, and a condensed section for persons who can attend only evenings and Saturday. Art 500R-47 (for three hours U of U credit) or 2R-47 (non-credit) will meet from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, April 26-30. Credit tuition is $70; non-credit fee is $50. Art 5O0R9 (for one hour U of U credit) or 2R-49 (non-credit) (non-credit) will meet from 7 until 10 p.m., Thursday and Friday, April 29 and 30, and from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, Sa-turday, May 1. Credit tuition is $55; non-credit fee is $50. In addition, Ms. Fox will teach "Patchwork Patterns: The Great American Art li," a continuation of "Patchwork Patterns I" which will lead the more advanced student into drafting patterns in a greater variety of shapes, including diamonds, rhomboids, rhom-boids, curved seams, etc. THIS WORKSHOP will introduce three more patterns, pat-terns, each of historical significance. sig-nificance. "Patchwork Patterns Pat-terns 11" (Art 5O0R-48 for three hours U of U credit or 2R-48 non-credit) will meet from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. April 26-30. Ms. Fox is currently preparing an historical research project endorsed by the Los Angeles Bicentennial committee. Titled "The Fabric of a Nation, A Century of American Quilts and Quilt-makers." Quilt-makers." the project will culminate in a major exhibition exhibi-tion in the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery in Barnsdall Park next summer. |
