AT shortstop is Fred Hale who Coach Olsen insists is "one of the best players to ever put on a Bountiful uniform." Fred has excellent range and extremely accurate throwing arm. One of the criteria for a great shortstop is his ability to go deep for the ball and still have the throwing ability to get the ball to first. Fred has that ability. THE outfield is reserved for the teams speed and hitting. If Olsen finds a player with a hot bat he'll insert him in the outfield out-field somewhere. Usually in the outfield for the Braves is Wally Beck, Doug Freckleton and Mark Purdie. Beck is probably the fastest player on the Brave squad, he utilizes that speed to cover a lot of ground from his left-field left-field spot. FRECKLETON is deceptive in center, he doesn't possess the great speed but he an ticipates as well as anyone. He always seems to get under the ball when needed. Purdie is one of the surprises on the team. He doesn't look like a long ball hitter but this little left-handed swinger can fool you if you play him shallow. PITCHING for the Braves is a bright spot according to Coach Olsen. "This is one of the better staffs I've had here at Bountiful." Leading the mound brigade are Tom Hilton, Pat Sorenson and Mike MacArdle. These three form the nucleus of the pitching staff. HILTON, only a junior, is the left-hander in the bunch and has the best control of the group. Sorenson, a transfer from Viewmont, is the most consistent consis-tent of the three. And MacArdle, a big right handed chucker, is the strikeout artist, ar-tist, dw t |
