THE MEETING will be in the City Office at 17 South Main Street in North Salt Lake. Mr. Lynn Cullimore, the city manager, explained that the purpose of the hearing is to let any interested citizens express their feelings on the proposal. HE INDICATED that any interested person will be heard from at the hearing. The city council will also point out to the citizens their reasoning in seeking the increase. The proposed increase will be about a 31 per cent increase over the present rates. MR. CULLIMORE used the example of one of the councilmans coun-cilmans bill. He pointed out that the city bills every two months. "During the summer an average resident of NSL uses about 65,000 gallons of water each billing period, (2 months). That costs that person per-son $15.76 for his water. With the proposed increase the same amount of water used would cost $20.50." Keep in mind these are summer figures and that's when a resident uses the most water. In the winter time the bills are much lower. MR. CULLIMORE pointed out that this is the first water rate increase since July of 1962. The city auditors have been suggesting the increase for years. The purpose of the increase is to help the water depart ment carry itself financially, at the present rate it just isn't doing it. ONE OF the reasons for the proposed rate increases is the increase in expenses and costs to the city. The city has the money for operation and maintainance, but they don't have the money to replace old pipes. dw |
